Taiyuan High- teeh Industry Development Zone is a state- level high- tech zone approved by the State Council, the earliest one in Shanxi province. Its planning area is 60.8 square kilometers. The zone sets the entrances to Jing- Tai expressway, Da- Yun expressway and Tat- Jiu expressway. It is close to Wusu Airport, with convenient air transportation. It enjoys advantages in its geographical location and particularly favourable natural conditions in translating the results of science and technology to productive force. At the end of 2003, there were more than 1400 enterprises settled in the zone, of which 286 were high-tech enterprises. Its total income of science research, industry and trade reached 24.5 billion yuan, 23 enterprises each with income of over 100 million yuan, 95 enterprises each with income of over 10 million yuan. A total of more than 760 items of high-tech products and projects are settled on the zone, including optical - electrical integration, electronic information, new materials, environment protection, energy-saving, biological medicine, aerospace, nuclear application technology and modern agriculture, etc. Of which 72 items reach the international advanced technology, 34 items are ratified to the list of Shanxi provincial 1311 high-tech industrial projects and Taiyuan major and potential products. In 2003, a total investment for enterprises' science and technology activities anti projects reached 790 million yuan. Its research and development (R& D) investment totaled 240.00 million yuan. A lot of items with high- tech contents and high additional -value products have come to scale production phase and gradually become to new economic growth areas.

Taiyuan High-tech Industry Development Zone aims to "development high- tech and realize industrialization''.
