   In recent years, the strength of comprehensive economy in Taiyuan has enhanced and its urban functions have further promoted. In 2003, its GDP hit 51.559 billion yuan, up 15.5 per cent from the last year. The primary industry has increased to 1.777 billion yuan, up 3.8 per cent. The secondary industry has increased to 26.569 billion yuan, up 19.8 per cent and the tertiary industry has increased to 23.186 billion yuan, up 11.9 per cent. Per capita GDP was 15206 yuan. The proportion of the three industries was 3.4 per cent, 51.6 per cent and 45.0 per cent, respectively.

   The farming conditions in Taiyuan are very different in different regions for its complicate landforms. The agriculture in plain counties and regions are more flourishing than that in mountain or hill counties and regions.

   Taiyuan has sound industrial and system, with various industries and sectors. Its heavy industry is booming. In 2003,the proportion of heavy industry above designated size accounted for 90 per cent of the total industries. Energy, metallurgy, machinery and chemical industry are the four pillar industries in the city. There are 27 generator sets in the city, with installed power-generating capacity of 2.061 million kilowatts and annual electricity output of plant of 14.173 billiom kilowatts-hours.

   Since China¡¯s reform and opening up to the outside world, the tertiary industry in Taiyuan has developed rapidly and has become a key sector, playing an important role in national economic development. Such sectors as retail, catering trade, finance, insurance, real estate and social service have been growing rapidly and have been making more contributions to the local national economy.
