Industrial Production

   Taiyuan, one of the key bases of industries in China, has such four pillars as energy, metallurgy, machinery and chemical industries, and other sectors as textile, light industry, medicine, electronics, building materials, electricity and food, etc. with wide varieties of products and sound foundation of modern industrial system. There are many large enterprises in Taiyuan. For examples: Shanxi Coke and Coal Group Corporation is the largest power coal and coking coal base in China, with excellent quality of coal and coke. Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group Corporation is the largest special steel base in China. Taiyuan Coal Gasification Group Corporation is the largest coal comprehensive utilization enterprise in China. Taiyuan No.1 Thermal Power Plant is the largest one in China. Taiyuan Corundum Group Corporation is the largest base of brown corundum production in the world. Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Plant is a large machinery enterprise.

   In 2003, the enterprises above designated size totaled 452, consisting of 33 industries, with a gross industrial output value of 51.832 billion yuan and an industrial added value of 16.175 billion yuan. The output of the 70 kinds of products among the statistical 140 kinds increased from the last year, of which 51 kinds each output was increased by more than 10 per cent.

   The industrial economic returns are continuously growing. The comprehensive index of industrial economic earning is 96.15, up 13.81 per cent over the last year. The product sales income, the profits and the taxes were 59.625 billion yuan, 1.336 billion yuan and 4.738 billion yuan, respectively; up 46.0 per cent, 199.0 per cent and 54.3 per cent, respectively. The labor productivity reached 45135 yuan/man, up 50.5 per cent.
