    With the improvement of consumption and demands, the consumer market is developing. The commercial structures and the commercial network have been readjusted and improved. A number of large and multifunctional shopping centres, catering service sectors and supermarkets have been flourishing, providing favorable conditions for consumers.      Amid commercial network over the city, there are 40 thousand business spots, of which 26 thousand are for goods selling and 5.6 thousand for wood service and 8.2 thousand for other service taking a total space of 350 thousand square meters and having a total payroll of 230.7 thousand. In average, there are 11.08 commercial spots for per thousand residents.

     Over the last few years, restructuring move has achieved a lot, by taking guideline of improving the city’s function and regularity of commercial categories. Having adopted most of commercial types, the customer retailing took on a new look. The booming of commercial economy now is pushing up essentially the GDP of Taiyuan.

     In 2003, the retail sales of consumer goods for the whole society totaled 18.540 billion yuan, including retail amount of wholesale trade of 15. 250 billion yuan and retail amount of catering sector of 2.630 billion yuan. The retail sales in non- public sectors have been increasing, with 15.440 billion yuan. Its urban retail sales totaled 17.290 billion yuan. Its retail sales at and below the level of county totaled 1. 283 billion yuan.
