Communication and Transportation

   Taiyuan is one of the hubs of communications in North China. Railway and highway lines link up all parts of the city. Taiyuan railway station is a hub of the six trunk railway lines of Tong-Pu, Shi-Tai and Jing- Yuan, etc. It is also the largest freight station in the province anti coal transport station in North China. The railway Da-Yun crosses through the city. The 8 highway lines such as Tai-Mao and Shi - Tai link up all parts of the province and outside the province. The expressways such as Tai -Jiu bring about Taiyuan more convenient to communicate with other regions in the whole country. In 2003, the annual amount of freight transport by railway and highway totaled 234.17 million tons, and the annual amount of passenger transport totaled 39.00 million persons. Now, it has more than 50 air routes to other airports both at home and abroad, such as to Hong Kong and large and middle cities and regions in the whole country. In 2003, the amount of aviation transport reached 103,000 passengers, up more than 26.3per cent over the last year.

    Taiyuan public traffic network has been formed. Its traffic capacity ranks the top in the whole country. At present, a total of 79 traffic lines have put into operation, with operative mileage of 1160 kilometers. The number of various public buses has reached 1428 units and the number of taxi has reached 8300 units. All these provide more convenient traffic for the city and form a brilliant landscape in street.
