Gujiao City

    Geographical and Natural Conditions:

    Gujiao City is located in the east of Luliang Mountain Ranges, 50 kilometers to Taiyuan City. It is a city at county level directly under Taiyuan City and is one of the eight bases of energy in China. Railway and highway lines link to the territory. Gujiao City is situated in a temperate zone, with continental monsoon climate, drought and windy in spring, hot and rainy in summer, cool in autumn and cold in winter. Its annual precipitation averages 466 mm. The City covers an area of 1584 square kilometers, of which hills and mountains accounting for 95.8 per cent of the total, with relief topography and average altitude of 1604 meters above sea level. The Fenhe River runs through the territory from the west to the east. Now it governs 7 townships, 3 towns, 4 subdistrict offices, 146 villages and 36 community commissions, with permanent population of 211, 000 including non -agricultural population of 130, 000.

    History:

    Gujiao City is one of the birthplaces of Chinese nationality, with a long history. In the ancient times, Chinese ancestors worked and lived in the land. In history, Gujiao was affilicated to Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-475 B. C.) and to Zhao during the Warring States Period (475 -221 B. C.). Gujiao was named in the Sui Dynasty (596). Since later years of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Gujiao had been affiliated to Jiaocheng County or Yangqu County. Gujiao Industrial and Mineral District was established directly under Taiyuan City in 1958, and then was changed and named as Gujiao City on December 27, 1988.

    Advantages in Geographical Location:

    Gujiao City is rich in mineral resources, with coal field area of 754 square kilometers and proved reserves of 9.6 billion tons, or with 6.24 million tons of coal reserve per square kilometer. It is known as "Sea of Coal" for its fine quality of coal. Of which the fat coal and the coking coal account for 71 per cent of the total. So, it is an ideal area for building a large modern coal production base. Moreover, it has proved the mineral resources of manganese, limestone, bauxite, gypsum, sulphur, copper, silver, mica, berg crystal, and oryctocenose - a bird' s sternum, with abundant reserves and fine quality. Now, the raw coal, coke, iron and steel have become the three pillars in Gujiao industrial production.

    Social and Economic Development:

    With the rapid development of mineral construction, a great change has taken place in Gujiao City. In 2003 its GDP was 3.111 billion yuan, up 16.9 per cent. Its financial income totaled 413 million yuan, up 86.6 per cent. Its retail sales of consumer goods for the whole society reached I. 054 billion yuan, up 13.1 per cent. Per capita net income of farmers was 3748 yuan, up 10.6 per cent. Its saving deposits of urban and rural residents totaled 2.749 billion yuan, up 30.2 per cent over the last year. Its modern construction is surging and the appearance of the City is experiencing daily changes. A remote and backward countryside in the past days has been constructed to a modern and prosperous coal city.
